How do I get involved?
According to renowned biologist, E.O. Wilson, - "Scientific natural history is one of the few endeavors in which any interested person can make original contributions to science... There are just too many kinds of organisms [to study] and too few professional scientists."
The City of Winnipeg is looking for volunteers to help with population monitoring of Canada geese, to help with deterring Canada geese in sensitive areas and to provide feedback on Canada geese in the City.
Population monitoring is an important component to any management program. The City of Winnipeg and other members of the Urban Goose Working Group are involved in goose counts in the spring, summer and fall, counting both resident and migratory populations.
Since a lot of the land around retention basins is privately owned, there may be important information that we are missing or don't have access to.
Here is some of the information we are looking for:
- Nest Locations
- When Canada geese arrive in the late winter/early spring
- When nest building and egg laying begins
- The arrival of migratory geese in the fall
- The number of adult geese and goslings
- Unique observations you may have about the geese at your pond
