McKittrick Park and Fort Rouge Leisure Centre Green Space Improvements

This project is now complete

Ce projet est terminé

The City of Winnipeg asked for public feedback on concept plans for McKittrick Park and the green space located at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre site's northeast corner. These concept plans feature a number of improvements to the swing sets, pathways, and park benches. The City asked the community to share their vision for the site to ensure that the proposed concept plans meet residents' visions and needs for the area.

Update August 2018 – As of July 10, 2018 construction on planned improvements has been completed. Construction began on September 15, 2017. Details on the updates can be found under the background tab .

Background

Update August 2018: Work completed at McKittrick Park includes:

  • New swing sets and engineered wood fibre safety surfacing, along with an accessible swing seat.
  • Renewal of a section of asphalt path and creating a small tricycle/bike loop with some small amenities such as fueling station or electric car plug-in station signs.
  • Removal of the old climbers located south of the wading pool and the installation of a new barbeque pit at that location.
  • New park benches.

Work completed at the green space located at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre site's northeast corner includes:

  • Removal of the lawn bowling and fencing and replacement with sod.
  • Creating an opportunity to have a pleasure rink in the winter and summer turf games such as Bocce ball.
  • Developing a small reading garden with new benches and trees.

McKittrick Park and green space at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre site, located on Rathgar Avenue between Cockburn Street and Lilac Street, serve the Lord Roberts area and currently features a wading pool, softball diamond and a play structure.

Approximately $200,000 was available through the City's Parks and Recreation Enhancement Fund (PREP) for improvements at McKittrick Park and the green space located at the northeast corner of the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre site where lawn bowling was located.

Engage

Thank you to everyone who participated in the public engagement process. We asked the community to share their vision for both sites to ensure that the proposed concept plans meet with residents' visions and needs for the area. Public input gathered as part of this public engagement process led to a site plan for green space improvements at McKittrick Park and at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre site's northeast corner (where the lawn bowling green was located). Our online survey closed May 2, 2017 with 105 submissions. Thank you to everyone who joined us at an open house April 25, 2017 at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre. There were 18 visitors and 10 exit surveys completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the McKittrick and Fort Rouge Leisure Centre Green Space Improvements consultation about?
The City is seeking public feedback on the concept plans for green space improvements at McKittrick Park and the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre site's northeast corner. These concept plans feature a number of improvements to the swing sets, pathways, and park benches. The City is asking the community to share their vision for the site to ensure that the proposed concept plans meet residents' visions and needs for the area.
Why is this needed?
McKittrick Park is a well-used park within the Lord Roberts community. Approximately $200,000 is available through the City of Winnipeg's Parks and Recreation Enhancement Fund (PREP) to update park infrastructure. The City would like to get feedback park users on the work proposed for the site.
What's going to happen with the lawn bowling area?
Use of the lawn bowling equipment has declined over the last number of years. However, the community has been playing other casual turf sports in this area. The bent grass turf that was built for lawn bowling needs to be maintained every two to three days and does not stand up well to heavier use. Conversion to regular park turf would be less expensive to maintain and more adaptable to various activities.
What's the budget for the project?
Approximately $200,000 is available through the City's Parks and Recreation Enhancement Fund (PREP) for improvements at McKittrick Park and the northeast corner of the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre site.
When will construction begin?
Construction is expected to begin in late summer / fall 2017.
How long will the project take?
Construction is expected to take approximately one month to complete.
Previous public engagement discussed Lord Roberts Community Centre and Lord Roberts School as priority areas for investment, as well as a splash pad for McKittrick Park. Why are those areas no longer being studied?
The Lord Roberts School property is not owned by the City. Lord Roberts Community Centre upgrades focused more on building and facility-related improvements. The PREP funding for this project must be used for parks and recreation, and is not earmarked for water amenities.

Did you know that when you register your child for a sport at a local community centre, a portion of the registration fee is used to:

Aerate, top dress, and fertilize soccer, baseball and football pitches? The fee only contributes to approximately 50% of the total cost of these services.

This youth athletic fee is already included in your registration fee, and is approximately $10 per participant.
