Biography

I live in Wolseley with my partner Karen. I grew up in Surrey B.C. and moved to Winnipeg in 2007. I am a community organizer and policy analyst working on issues of social justice and poverty elimination at the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg (on election leave). Earlier this year, I led research and analysis of the Winnipeg Street Census, a multi-stakeholder research project that interviewed over 1,500 people experiencing homelessness. I am the former chair of Make Poverty History Manitoba where I helped push the provincial government to implement Rent Assist, a program that helps thousands of low income Manitobans access housing.

I have worked at several national and local environmental organizations including Manitoba Eco-Network and Green Action Centre and I served as national chair of the Canadian Environmental Network. I have also worked as a researcher at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. In 2015, I co-edited Poor Housing: a Silent Crisis, a book on low income housing in Winnipeg published by Fernwood Publishing.

Biography

Over the last four years I have had the privilege to serve as your City Councillor in Daniel McIntyre. Working for the community where I grew up, went to school, and raised my family, is truly an honour. My slogan this year is Working Together Works! I have seen first-hand the power of speaking with community members and working together to achieve great things! Part of working together involves reaching out. This is why I hold monthly meetings, Conversations with your Councillor, at the Cindy Klassen Rec Centre. These meetings allow me to hear the thoughts of the community and bring those issues to City Hall.

I have been very committed to improving our parks and recreation sites and we have been able to accomplish many projects over the past four years. Some improvements include the new beach volleyball courts at the Cindy Klassen Rec Centre and the Orioles Community Centre Redevelopment. We have also committed record levels of funding for roads, lanes and sidewalks and are starting to see real progress. Let's keep this momentum going and continue working together!

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you over the last four years. I hope you will give me your support in the upcoming election so I can continue working for our community for another four years!

I am 56 years old and married. As a child, I grew up in the Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry Ward. My father operated a convenience store in the Osborne Village until his retirement. In 2016, I graduated from CDI College as a Health Care Aide. I am probably best known for my work as a disability and anti-poverty advocate. My Mission Statement: "I will be a champion for positive social change in my community, which results in the inclusion and full-citizenship of ALL Manitobans."

I have 29 years of experience supporting people with various challenges to live in our community. I am a strong believer in empowering individuals as well as communities to participate in society as "responsible citizens" and not just as taxpayers. Over the years, I have held various leadership roles in the community. I'm the former chair of the Winnipeg Transit Riders Association. Many people know me from my column in the Winnipeg Sun. Since January 2010, I have been writing a monthly column on poverty and disability related issues. I currently work for the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg as a Special Needs Programming Inclusion Aide.

I am an independent candidate and excited about the opportunity to represent the people of Mynarski. Like many taxpayers, I believe party politics has no place at city hall.I have lived in the North End for the past fifteen years, and over the years in West Broadway, the West End, Elmwood and Saint Boniface. Five years ago I moved my law office to 1354 Main Street, after 15 years on McPhillips Street. My preferred areas of law are real estate, wills and estates.

I studied law at the University of Manitoba and graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a B.A (honours) in the study of economic development. I have travelled extensively and through the study of law I have developed an understanding of how governments work. I have also worked for various city departments, including works and operations and water and waste.

I understand community issues, from the perspective of a volunteer and as a former manager of the Ralph Brown Community Centre. My interests include swimming, cycling and photography. See more of my interests on Facebook.

Let me take this opportunity to make introductions. I was born and raised in North End Winnipeg, as a young child I played and participated in sports and activities at Luxton Community Center. I attended Luxton elementary as well as St Johns High School.

I have been very lucky to be married to my wife Paulette for almost 30 years. I met her at my grand parents Church which was 1.5 miles from the family farm. We have been blessed with two great kids. She is now the CFO for my group of companies.

Our family has always lived in the Mynarski Ward as it is where I grew up, and it is a great neighborhood to raise a family. I started my working life in Heavy Construction installing water & sewer systems in the developing City and Province, but in 1989 I started the company that has kept me busy for the past 30 years. DLM Group of companies started at the Salisbury House Restaurant on Main & Matheson when a friend needed transport service for his business. We have expanded every year since inception and employ 40 people.

Biography Biographie

Scott Gillingham was elected to City Council in 2014 after serving as pastor of the Grace Community Church. Since then, he has become widely respected by colleagues, department staff and stakeholders.

When Scott ran for council, road repairs were his top priority and he is happy to have delivered that commitment by supporting record road investment over the last four years. This focus must remain as the job of rebuilding St. James' street network is not complete, however significant gains have been made on our regional and local streets.

Scott has served as the chairperson of the Winnipeg Police Board and the Standing Policy Committee on Finance. Scott applies a responsible look at the city finances and during his two-year term as police board chair, he showed leadership on curbing the year-to-year spending growth of the police budget, which is the single largest spending item in the budget.

Since moving to Finance, Scott has applied the same focus on overall City finances and oversaw the development of the 2018 Budget. This budget was noteworthy for having the smallest annual spending growth since Unicity was established. By focusing on targeted spending on items such as road repairs and manageable labour costs through firm collective bargaining negotiations, this responsible approach has been the hallmark of his time on City Council.

Scott and his wife Marla have been married for 25 years and live in Silver Heights. Together, they have raised two adult children, daughter Hannah and son Andrew.

I have a heart for public service and helping people. Being in emergency services/healthcare, I have spent the last 15 years dedicated to being there to support people and their families in times of need. I am a graduate of Transcona Collegiate Institute in 1997, and followed that with a Bachelor of Arts in both Sociology and Criminal Justice from the University of Winnipeg. I also earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Manitoba.

Transcona holds a special place in my heart. I grew up in Transcona, spending my entire childhood there. From playing hockey at Oxford Heights Community Club and baseball with Park City West, to working at the local Safeway during my student years. I have been very involved over the years in many community projects, such as coaching basketball, board member for a 55+ affordable housing apartments in St. Vital, All Saints Kinsmen for almost 15 years and volunteering on numerous other projects and charities in the communities.

This last year I worked with several schools in LRSD to test pilot a project called Pets in the Classroom. Helping teachers to have small pets in their classrooms. The benefits of pets in a classroom are quite surprising (lower anxiety, higher self esteem, sense of responsibility to name a few). This project is still going on.

So after attending LRSD board meetings for the last year and a half I have decided to run for school trustee.

My role in being a school board trustee would revolve around being a voice for the community - to being open and approachable to the residents and teachers to bring their concerns and questions to the Louis Riel School Division.

When my children started school, I became even more interested in getting involved in educational issues and have been a Louis Riel School Division Board of Trustees member since 2010 and Board Chair since 2016.

I am proud of and inspired by the strong sense of community in LRSD schools and my passion is to ensure equal access to quality education for all students.

I prioritize citizenship, engagement and literacy/numeracy throughout the Division and believe we strengthen the public education system and in turn strengthen the community.

I strongly believe that all citizens benefit when the public education system is strong.

I, Tom Parker, have been involved with education throughout most of my adult life as an elementary teacher, a Phys. Ed. Supervisor and a principal in three schools, including Windsor Park Collegiate. I am very interested in making it possible for all children to achieve success. Students can be successful if there if there is a positive connection between the school and the community- [School Staff and Parents]. WE ARE ALL TEACHERS and we all play a part in the education of our children. Board members provide opportunities for successful students by LISTENING to all members of the community and providing policies and programs which meet the needs of all students. We establish the expectations for our children and provide for a safe learning environment in all our schools. As a result of consulting with students, parents, and staff via surveys, or face to face discussions, we can initiate new policies and programs which meet student's interest and needs. An example is our Human Diversity policy which was one of the first in Canada, and has been a benchmark for other Canadian Boards. Students and parents have been advocates for more career exploration and financial education. We are currently meeting that need.

Seeking Re-election...incumbent since 2014.

I believe that quality education is the key to shaping a better tomorrow. Through education we create better lives for individuals, greater equality within society and a more sustainable and prosperous world.

Who I am...

Born and raised in Winnipeg, I graduated from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Human Ecology (Majoring in Family Economics and Management), and hold a certificate in French Language Studies from Laval University in Quebec City.

After a 30 year career with the Provincial Public Service, I retired from the position of Director, Finance and Administration, Healthy Child Manitoba. An advocate for children and youth, my passion and enthusiasm for child-centred public policy culminated in a 14 year career with Healthy Child Manitoba. I am honoured to have contributed in the development of an innovative and nationally recognized strategy of Provincial programs and services for Manitoba's Children and youth.

Through continued involvement in various cultural and community organizations, in 2016 I accepted a Protocol Position at the Legislative Building: I presently hold an Administrative Liaison position within the Office of the Special Envoy for Military Affairs, Province of Manitoba.

Of all roles, my most rewarding is that of being a single mother to my birth-daughter Bailey, and two "adopted" foreign students: Shiya and Taylor. BiographyBiographie

After the birth of our first child, my wife and I made the decision to purchase our first home and raise our family in Transcona. We've expanded our family twice more since (ages 8, 6 & 4), and it would be a privilege to be a voice for both my community and my children on the trustee board.

We all know the saying "It takes a village to raise a child", meaning that a child benefits most when its well-being is attended to by people from an assortment of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. By the same measure, we benefit when our board represents individuals from all walks of life and professions.

My relevant experiences include:

  • 10+ years expertise as a senior data/intelligence analyst for a regional telecom
  • Proficiency in deriving concise answers from complex sets of data
  • Extensive project experience, involving government regulatory and corporate takeover approval
  • Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in Finance/Marketing

Being a resident of North Kildonan for the last 10 years, my husband and I knew this was the area to raise our family. Our children are just beginning their educational journeys. I can imagine no better time than now to step up to help mold and shape the system that will in turn mold and shape them.

My experiences being an active member in our church, sitting on the boards of my children's schools and child care centers, and coaching community sports, have demonstrated to me the importance of having a strong community to support the future of our children. The issues facing families, schools, and communities are more complex than ever before.

As a parent, I am reminded daily of these issues as I work to raise my children in an ever-changing society.

As a parent, I am committed to making sure our teachers have the tools they need to guide our children through these issues and challenges and lead them on to reaching their full potential.

I am a parent; not a politician.

I believe, in order to be relevant with respect to the issues facing our children, our elected School Trustees should have children currently attending school in the Division. My children are in the early stages of their education, both currently attending Sun Valley School.

My formative years were in North Kildonan schools; culminating with high-school graduation from River East Collegiate en route to a Commerce Degree at the University of Manitoba. I moved my young family back here, knowing it would be an upstanding neighbourhood in which to raise our children. I am now a stay-at-home Dad and it truly is an exciting time!

In my professional career, I was elected as a Board Member to the Board of Governors of the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange, so I know what it takes to effectively function and contribute at a similarly high level. Interspersed throughout my community service have been involvements in numerous committees and volunteer efforts, such as Folklorama; Ste. Anne's Lubov Pre-School Parents' Council; and Gateway Community Centre, to name a few.

I was born and raised in Flin Flon, MB. My dad worked at the mine (HBM&S) doing instrumentation, my mom stayed home looking after myself and my brother. I graduated Hapnot Collegiate High school in 2005 and left for Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba. In September 2009 purchased my first house in the Jameswood area. I graduated in October 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies from the University of Manitoba.

I worked for a local landscaping company after graduating until I was offered a position within the Canada Border Services Agency in December 2010. After nearly 3 months in Rigaud, QC I graduated and moved to Calgary, AB to start at Calgary International Airport in April of 2011. I met my wife Brooklyn in March of 2012 while visiting Winnipeg. We got married in August of 2013 and I was able to transfer with CBSA to Windygates Border Crossing in September of 2013.

In April 2015 our family doubled in size. Anson and Miranda have been keeping me on my toes ever since. Living in the small houses in the Jameswood area was beginning to be a tight fit so the family moved to the Kirkfield area in October 2015.

Most recently our family has grown even bigger in June with the birth of our 3rd child Audrey.

Parenting is enhanced by schools that connect with homes. In many ways, school systems respond to changes that are a part of everyday life. Education also shapes and prepares people for citizenship; the importance of which cannot be overstated.

Biography Biographie

Five years ago when my son and his service dog became a team there was no service animal policy in the SJSD. After much advocating and work with the school board a service animal policy was passed. Today, many children in our division are benefiting from this policy. It feels great knowing I helped make a difference in these children's education. Making a difference is the reason I want to be a school trustee.

Over the years I've been a strong advocate for special education and student services at school board meetings. As an EA, I've seen first hand how students can thrive and reach their full potential with the proper support.

I've also been outspoken about the negative effects of tax increases. Working with seniors on a fixed income in our community and at Deer Lodge Center, I've seen how a small amount of money can mean the difference between eating or visiting a loved one.

I've lived in St James for 18 years. I'm raising 4 wonderful children here. I look forward to the opportunity to serve the community I love!

As a parent of a young child entering the school system, being involved in the education system is important to Craig and his wife. Especially when there are no School Trustees in the area that have any children in school.

Craig believes that education is an important pillar in any child's foundation towards success in life. That is why he is committed to ensuring that the current and future generations of the St. James-Assiniboia School Division have access to safe, quality education.

Craig's strong passion of education has lead him to attain his MBA from Chaminade University of Honolulu, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba and a Certificate in Marketing Strategy from Cornell University.

Craig is a proud resident of Silver Heights, and both he and his wife look forward to continue raising their son in the St. James-Assiniboia area. I am a proud Winnipegger and resident of St. James. I had a good experience growing up in this area, benefitting from French Immersion and school sports, so wish the same for my children. The importance of a good education and stable environment for them would reflect on my decision making as a School Trustee.

I have 10 years experience as an Education Assistant (five in this division) and 15 years experience in the child care field. I have worked in every school in this Ward and my children attend schools in this area. With relevant real-world experience and years of working in schools, I have firsthand knowledge of current educational issues and practices, contributing to an informed perspective of the current realities in this division.

I share the St. James-Assiniboia School Division's vision of values and goals for a successful student body. Schools should be a safe and inclusive place for all. Bullying prevention, services for students with special needs, strong arts and sport programs and various clubs give opportunity for students to belong and evolve. Strengthening home, school and community partnerships ensure that parents and children have the resources and tools required to reach their potential.

Elected as a trustee in Seven Oaks Ward II In 2014, I look forward to continuing to serve the students and families of The Maples, Amber Trails, Riverbend, River Ridge and River Grove areas. My service as a trustee is informed by my life growing up, and my past career as an early years teacher, all in Seven Oaks. Most of my career was in The Maples where it was exciting and fulfilling to work with diverse individuals and become part of many families. Families are the strength of students and the strength of the Seven Oaks School Division. I believe the culture of Seven Oaks, based on relationships and real connections between students and teachers, students and curricular areas, the arts, physical activities and outdoor learning, contributes to our graduates being educated, well-rounded, compassionate citizens. Our diverse community enriches all. Jets fans all celebrated the Bangra dancers, many our own grads, during the playoff run. The annual graduation Pow Wow now requires the space of the Soccer complex. The huge annual Filipino Fiesta is held in the heart of our community. This diversity makes living in Seven Oaks an exciting place to live, work and socialize as we interact with others in our daily life. We must not take this interaction for granted but nurture it and the people in our schools and community places. As a parent, grandparent and daughter I appreciate and value the culture of our Seven Oaks community as it enriches my family's life.

Hi, I am Greg McFarlane, one of your Seven Oaks School Trustee's, and I am running for re-election.

I am a passionate labour and community activist. With my roots in Trades, and an immigrant to Canada I know the importance of having a voice on the issues that affect us all.

As the proud father to two young children, and as the only Trustee with children in our division I have a vested interest in ensuring that our students have the best possible education. My life skills, experience, and education have helped the division implement programs and initiatives that have had a direct and positive impact on our children and their opportunities for the future. Teaching our students the skills necessary to succeed, whether through university or pursing alternative career paths is paramount to me.

I am a former soldier on the Canadian Military Reserve, a Red Seal Electrician, an Alumni of the Governors Generals Leadership Conference, chaired the Division Policy Committee, and received Manitoba's 2015 Journeyperson Of The Year. My volunteerism has focused on improving the lives of the community and the future we give our children, with Habitat for Humanity, United Way, basketball coach, and more. This and my work for the Manitoba Federation of Labour has given me the experience necessary to bring fresh ideas for improvements, knowledge on how to implement them, and the understanding and appreciation for listening to what people's concerns are in order to create an environment where all may thrive.

I grew up in a loving Metis family in St.Laurent, Manitoba before moving to Winnipeg to go to university. I'm a full-time working mom to Amara and Jette, and my wonderful husband Chris teaches Grade 6 at Ecole J.B. Mitchell School. Our family has lived in River Heights for 15 years and my kids go to public school in our neighbourhood. I'm proud to count many teachers and educators among my family, friends, and neighbours. I'm grateful for their advice and support as I seek election to the Winnipeg School Board.

I have a deep commitment to serving our community and I've spent my career working in the public sector. I've held senior roles in project management, budget supervision, policy development, and stakeholder relations and negotiations. I'm currently a Human Resources professional with a major Crown Corporation and I serve on the Board of Directors for the Women's Health Clinic and the Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce. I previously served on the boards of Sir John Franklin Community Centre and Corydon Community Centre. My time outside of work and volunteering is focused on my kids and their many activities.

I believe all children should have a positive school experience where they are supported by teachers, staff, and their community. I love that my kids look forward to going to school every day and can get a French education so that they can speak to their grandparents in their first language. I want all our children to have access to those same opportunities.
