Flight Operations

The primary purpose of the Flight Operations Unit (FOU) is to support all operational and investigative Service units in the detection of criminal acts and the apprehension of suspects. The Flight Operations is also trained and equipped to assist WPS units and external agencies in the search efforts for missing and vulnerable persons. The Flight Operations Unit provides an aerial platform for the Winnipeg Police Service and partner agencies for a wide range of mission types.
Air crews provide assistance with the following, weather permitting:
- Respond to crimes in progress for aerial containment, reconnaissance and locate criminal suspects and evidence
- Track vehicles that have refused to stop for police and reduce the risk in these dynamic events by allowing ground resources to disengage and deploy other tactics to conclude the incident
- Illumination of crime scenes, collision scenes, vehicle stops, search areas, disturbances, and foot pursuits
- Aerial searches for missing or vulnerable persons
- Provide an aerial perspective and video for incident commanders to aid in decision making and response to major environmental incidents, fires and natural disasters
- Rapid deployment of Canine Unit members to remote locations under exigent circumstances
- Survey of specific locations in support of other police unit operations and mandates, including planning and support for large public events
- Conduct proactive patrols to identify and deter criminal activity, as well as detect other types of emergencies which pose as threat to public safety
