Residential Upgrading Program
Existing Buildings Inspectors regulate and inspect existing multi-residential buildings such as tri-plexes, four-plexes, apartments, condominiums, convents, dormitories, hotels, motels, hostels, and monasteries, to establish minimum life safety requirements, in accordance with the Residential Building Fire Safety Bylaw No. 4304/86
For those buildings subject to the by-law, this may require installation and upgrading of the following building components and systems:
- fire alarms,
- fire exits and fire escapes,
- emergency lighting,
- exit signage,
- fire doors and hardware,
- sprinkler systems,
- fire separations,
- fire fighter elevators, and
- standpipe systems
Note: The above list is not all inclusive nor intended to exclude any other type of construction and/or installation of equipment.
If you have questions related to a matter or situation with an existing building you can contact 204-986-5300, Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Complaints about the conditions of existing structures should be directed to 311 to ensure the matter is submitted to the appropriate city department.
