Background
Bison Drive and Waverley Street are important connections for south Winnipeg.
We are working on a design to extend Bison Drive from Kenaston Boulevard to Waverley Street. The work will also improve the Bison and Waverley intersection.
We need to:
- Better connect Waverley West to the regional street network
- Support future transit routes
- Enhance walking and biking paths in the area
These improvements will make it easier and safer to get around — whether you're driving, taking the bus, walking, or cycling.
At this point, we only have budget to design a solution. There is not yet funding for construction.
Over the next year, we will:
- Learn more about how people use the intersection
- Gather information from property owners and area stakeholders
- Develop design options
- Evaluate and refine design options
- Share the final draft design with Winnipeggers
Once we finalize the draft design, we will present it to Council for consideration.
Frequently Asked Questions
We are working on a design to extend Bison Drive from Kenaston Boulevard to Waverley Street. The work will also improve the Bison and Waverley intersection. We need to:
- Better connect Waverley West to the regional street network
- Support future transit routes
- Enhance walking and biking paths in the area
The intersection currently has high traffic volumes and unique design challenges. We need to help traffic flow better and make the area safer for everyone.
Over the past 20 years several studies and plans including the Waverley West Area Structure Plan and the City of Winnipeg Transportation Master Plan have identified the need for these improvements. The City also recently completed an initial analysis of the Bison Drive extension and Waverley Street intersection to explore different improvement options.
We are looking at new sidewalks and cycling paths to close the existing gaps in the network and connect to nearby neighbourhoods and parks.
Safety is a major focus of our project. We are including independent road safety reviews at multiple stages. This follows national best practices and will help make the intersection safer for all road users.
The project is not making any direct changes to transit routes or frequency. Our design will include improvements to stops and roadway connections that would support any future transit changes.
There is no budget or timeline for construction. We are currently only developing a draft design for Council consideration.
There will be no property acquisition as part of this project. Should any property be required to accommodate the recommended design, it would be acquired in the future, prior to construction, following further consultation.
