Creating Connections at Bison & Waverley

Bison Drive and Waverley Street are important connections for south Winnipeg.

Background

Bison Drive and Waverley Street are important connections for south Winnipeg.

We are working on a design to extend Bison Drive from Frontier Trail to Waverley Street. Extending Bison Drive from Frontier Trail to Waverley Street requires a complete re-design of the existing Bison and Waverley intersection to accommodate traffic flows.

We need to:

  • Better connect the community to the regional street network
  • Support future transit routes
  • Enhance walking and biking paths in the area

These improvements will make it easier and safer to get around — whether you're driving, taking the bus, walking, or cycling.

At this point, we only have budget to design a solution. There is not yet funding for construction.

Over the past several months, we have:

  • Learned more about how people use the intersection
  • Gathered information from property owners and area stakeholders
  • Developed design options
  • Evaluated and refined design options
  • Identified a preferred option

We are now ready to share the recommended draft design with Winnipeggers.

Once we finalize the design, it will be presented to Council for consideration.

What is the Creating Connections at Bison and Waverley project?

We are working on a design to extend Bison Drive from Frontier Trail to Waverley Street. Extending Bison Drive from Frontier Trail to Waverley Street requires a complete re-design of the existing Bison and Waverley intersection to accommodate traffic flows. We need to:

  • Better connect the community to the regional street network
  • Support future transit routes
  • Enhance walking and biking paths in the area

The intersection currently has high traffic volumes and unique design challenges. We need to help traffic flow better and make the area safer for everyone.

Has any other work been done for Creating Connections at Bison and Waverley before this project started?

Over the past 20 years several studies and plans, including the Waverley West Area Structure Plan and the City of Winnipeg Transportation Master Plan, have identified the need for these improvements. The City also recently completed an initial analysis of the Bison Drive extension and Waverley Street intersection to explore different improvement options.

How does the design improve walking and cycling?

We have included new sidewalks and multi-use paths in the design to close existing gaps in the network and connect to nearby neighbourhoods and parks.

How does the design address safety?

Safety is a major focus of our project. We considered safety implications during the development of the design options, and we also completed an independent road safety review at multiple stages. The reviews followed national best practices and will help make the intersection safer for all road users.

How will the project improve transit?

The project is not making any direct changes to transit routes or frequency. Our design includes improvements to stops and roadway connections that would support any future transit changes, including a route for the Bison Drive extension.

When will construction begin?

There is no budget or timeline for construction. We are currently only developing a design for Council consideration.

Will any properties be affected?

There are properties affected by the design. Any property required to accommodate the recommended design would be acquired in the future, prior to construction, following further consultation.
