Annual Grass Mowing Program
Parks and Open Space crews use about 259 mowers to cut grass on boulevards, athletic fields, parks, and other city owned green spaces.
In total throughout the mowing season, about 2,275 hectares are mowed on a rotating basis, with mowing cycles ranging from an average of 10 to 14 days. This equates to about eight to twelve mowing cycles during a season. For reference, one hectare equals approximately the same size as a CFL football field.
Grass growth in Winnipeg typically begins mid-May and continues until mid-October, and how quickly the grass grows is determined by the weather we receive, such as the amount of rainfall and heat. Depending on the extent of grass growth, crews may sometimes need to work weekends as required.
When dandelions emerge in Winnipeg they are also cut down as part of the mowing program. Dandelions typically emerge for three to four weeks before going to seed.
The public is reminded to use caution and stay back to stay safe when in the vicinity of mowing crews.
