Emergency vehicle entrance traffic signal

An emergency vehicle entrance traffic signal is a special type of traffic control signal with a unique appearance and operation that is used to help emergency vehicles quickly and safely access a public street.

Location: Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) Station #11, Portage Avenue at Route 90.

Typical installation

A sign is mounted below the traffic signal to indicate the direction from which the fire truck/emergency vehicle would enter the roadway.

How it works

a) Not illuminated

The traffic signals are not illuminated until activated as required by operators of emergency equipment leaving the station for emergency calls.

b) Flashing Amber Ball Indication

When activated, the amber ball indication flashes for a short duration; vehicular traffic facing the flashing amber ball indication may proceed with caution, after yielding to vehicles lawfully within the intersection.



c) Steady Amber Ball Indication

The steady amber ball indication should be interpreted the same way as a steady amber ball at a standard traffic signal controlled intersection. The steady amber ball indication warns motorists that the red light is about to appear; vehicular traffic facing a steady amber ball indication must stop before crossing the stop line. If the driver cannot make such a stop, the driver may proceed with caution.

 

d) Flashing Red Ball Indication

Vehicular traffic facing a flashing red ball indication must stop before crossing the stop line (if there is no stop line, vehicular traffic must stop before entering the intersection). Before proceeding, vehicular traffic must come to a complete stop and must not proceed until safe to do so.
