Know your Taxi

The City of Winnipeg requires all licensed taxis to display important information on trip price, and driver and vehicle identification. Knowing where this information is can help ensure a safe and fair trip for both passengers and drivers.

For emergency situations, call 911.

For any inquiries, or to file a report related to a dispatcher or taxi trip, contact 311.

Check the Taximeter

Taximeter

It indicates your fare. If a rate is negotiated in advance, the amount charged to the customer cannot be more than the total fare displayed on the meter at the end of the trip. The meter on a taxi vehicle must always be on when transportation service is being delivered.

The base fare of $3.75 increases $0.16 every 100 meters and $0.16 each 18.4 seconds of wait time. The tariff sticker is located on the outside right rear door of the vehicle. A driver may charge $1.25 in addition to the basic charge for pick up at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.

Understand your Taxi

Taxi

This is an example of a taxi with the Taxi Identification number (TID) and company decal. It is important to note the TID upon entering the taxi. The TID can be located:

  • Front driver and passenger side
  • Rear of the vehicle
  • Interior dash

When you get into a taxi, you can be sure that:

  • You will not be overcharged for your trip
  • The vehicle has regular safety inspections, which are intended to ensure it is in working condition
  • The vehicle and driver have commercial insurance that will cover you in the event of an accident
  • The fare meter has been inspected and will charge you the correct rate
  • The taxi is equipped with a camera recording video and audio for passenger and driver safety.

City of Winnipeg licensed taxis are not permitted to refuse rides based on the location of your destination. If you are refused a ride or witness any other problematic behavior in a taxi, contact 311 with the company name, unit number, time, date, and details of the incident.

Recognizing a Licenced Driver

Taxi driver's licence

The taxi driver's licence is displayed on the dashboard. It specifies the driver licence number and expiry date. A taxi driver is required to have their licence displayed at all times. All taxi drivers are required to obtain special training. The driver has submitted a criminal background check to the City of Winnipeg.
