Ultraviolet (UV) treatment temporarily shut off during upgrade work
We are continuing critical work to upgrade the North End Wastewater Treatment Plant and help the environment. On October 1, 2025, this upgrade work requires us to temporarily turn off UV treatment. We expect to turn UV treatment back on in March 2026.
Wastewater treatment will occur as normal during the upgrade, but without UV treatment. UV treatment uses UV light to inactivate bacteria and viruses, like E.coli and fecal coliform, from the treated wastewater we release into the river.
During the shut off, there will be a temporary increase in the existing levels of bacteria and viruses in the Red River downstream of the Plant. This is not harmful to fish but can have adverse health effects on humans and pets.
Stay safe while UV treatment is shut off
Residents living within three kilometres downstream of the Plant will be notified about the UV shut off.
Residents that use the river for recreation in that area can stay safe by following these steps:
- Avoid direct contact with river water, when possible
- Wash hands with soap after any direct contact with river water
- Use safe food handling practices when consuming fish obtained from the river
- Don't let your pets come into contact with or drink river water
This work will not affect residents' drinking water.
Wastewater reports
The Province of Manitoba requires us to share how much treated, but undisinfected, wastewater we are releasing into the Red River while UV treatment is shut off.
We will post the volumes every Friday in the chart below. If a holiday falls on a Friday, we will update the volumes the following Monday.
