Protect Yourself – Water Testing/Services

The City of Winnipeg is aware that residents may be the target of possible fraud or scams related to their water service, including:

  • Receiving text messages about water service turn-off
  • Having salespeople from private companies come to their door step who:
    • Provide incorrect information about water services
    • Attempting to sell water treatment systems

The City does not send text messages about turning off your water service. We deliver letters to residents for any planned work that requires water to be turned off. For emergency repairs, like a water main break, residents will not receive notification. You can also visit MyUtilityInfo to see what water main work may be happening in your area.

The City does not endorse any private company that tests water quality, water safety, or sells treatment systems. The City's water is safe, and meets or outperforms all safety and quality regulations.

If there is ever a water quality issue impacting your home, a City of Winnipeg employee will contact you. A City employee will never attempt to sell any product.

Before letting anyone into your home, ask for photo identification. All employees have City-issued photo identification. If you have any concerns about the identification of a City employee, contact 311.

If you think that you have been the target of fraud or a scam, you can learn how to protect yourself.
