If you are bitten by a dog or cat you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. All dog and cat bites should be reported immediately to the City of Winnipeg Animal Services Agency at 311.

What will happen to the dog or cat that bit me?

Under the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law dogs or cats that bite shall be placed in quarantine and kept for no less than 10 days, commencing from the date of the bite. In most cases, the dog/cat would be returned to its owner after the quarantine period has expired if the animal appears in good health.

Can I quarantine my dog or cat at a boarding kennel?

No - the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law requires you to quarantine your dog in Winnipeg at Animal Services, a veterinary clinic, or at your home under certain circumstances.

What will happen if I do not quarantine my dog/cat?

If an owner does not voluntarily surrender their dog/cat for quarantine, an order to seize and impound the dog/cat will be issued by a Provincial Judge.

Under whose authority do you quarantine dogs/cats?

The authority of our Animal Services Officers to provide animal control services within the City of Winnipeg falls under the City of Winnipeg Charter, the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law and the Province of Manitoba Summary Convictions Act.

If my dog/cat has had up-to-date rabies vaccinations, why does it have to be quarantined?

Rabies vaccinations do not 100% guarantee your dog or cat will not contract rabies. The quarantining of cats and dogs is for the protection of public health.

Does my pet need to be vaccinated against rabies?

Yes - The Responsible Pet Ownership By-law states that all cats and all dogs must have a current rabies vaccine.

What should I do if my dog/cat has been attacked by another dog/cat?

If your dog/cat has been attacked by another dog/cat you should gather as much information as possible including: animal description, owner description, owner address, and owner vehicle description and license plate number if you are unsure of the owner's address. Witness information is also helpful. Call the Animal Services Agency at 311 to file a report. Under the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law, dog and cat owners must ensure their pet does not bite, wound or otherwise injure any individual or animal.

How can I get the owner to pay my vet bills when their dog/cat injures my dog/cat?

If your dog/cat has been attacked by another dog/cat, you should call the Animal Services Agency at 311 to file a report. Under the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law, dog and cat owners must ensure their pet does not bite, wound or otherwise injure any individual or animal.
