Residential projects that typically do not require a permit
Some home renovation projects do not require a development or building permit. Even though a permit may not be required, it is still necessary for the following projects to comply with building code and zoning requirements.

- Replacing shingles with the same material
- Fences (single/two family dwellings only)
- Detached accessory structures less than 10 m2 (108 sq. ft.)
- Open deck under 600 mm (2’-0”) in height
- Interior work (painting, patching, decorating, installing cabinets or shelves)
- Replacing doors and windows with same size
