Cambridge Traffic Calming Project
Traffic Calming measures are coming to the area of Cambridge Street.
Existing conditions
- Cambridge Street is a two-lane, undivided residential street in River Heights
- It runs north-south
- It extends from Taylor Avenue on the South to Wellington Crescent on the north
- Sidewalks along the street are inconsistent
- There are sidewalks on both sides of the street from Academy Road to Grosvenor Avenue and Kingsway and Taylor Avenue
- There are no sidewalks on either side of the street between Grosvenor and Kingsway
- There is only a sidewalk on the west side of the street between Taylor Avenue and Poseidon Bay
- Parking is allowed on the westside of the street
- The speed limit is 50 km/h
- The daily traffic volume varies by segment
- Cambridge between Academy Road and Poseidon Bay sees more than 5,000 vehicles per day, which is higher than typical for both residential streets and collector streets.
- In terms of land use, the street features mostly single-family residential properties
Need for traffic calming
Cambridge is a high-priority location for traffic calming measures.
We collected traffic data in 2016, 2019, 2023, and 2024.
South of Corydon Ave we found that 40% of motorists are driving above the speed limit. North of Corydon Ave the typical speeds are not as high, but the road is narrower here and the volume of vehicles is much higher than we expect on a residential street.
We will install traffic calming measures in Summer 2025. This will help slow speeds and create a safer space for all road users until we can do a larger neighbourhood traffic study.
Interim solution
We plan to install speed humps, traffic calming curbs, and turn restrictions to calm traffic in the area.
- We will put permanent speed humps on both Cambridge and Oxford Street between Academy Road and Corydon Avenue
- We will put temporary speed humps on Wilton Street to discourage it as an alternate route
- We will narrow the road with traffic-calming curbs at multiple locations between Corydon Avenue and Grant Avenue
- We will remove right turns at Waverley and Mathers during morning peak periods and add temporary speed humps in the Mathers Avenue back lane to discourage short cutting
These changes should reduce vehicle speeds and traffic volumes. They should also minimize negative impacts on neighbouring streets.
Get involved
We want to hear from your community. Take a short online survey before July 14, 2025. We may be able to adjust portions of the design to better suit the community.
If you require alternate formats or interpretation please contact City-Engage@winnipeg.ca or call 204-986-4243 by July 7, 2025.
Next steps
Construction will start on the traffic calming measures in Summer 2025.
We will use what we hear from your survey responses to measure whether the changes are effective after they've been in place for some time.
