City river flooding protection
Regular flood forecasts are provided by the Province of Manitoba until the flood event passes. City engineers calculate the implications of each update and adjust the level of response required accordingly using the City’s Flood Manual.
The City's Flood Manual is a comprehensive data set of known actions or procedures required to fight a flood. The information is stored in a database that is referenced using geographical identifiers such as location and elevation. The information is updated each year in light of new experiences and changes, and is used by our engineers to calculate the activities required to protect Winnipeg against river flooding.
Flood protection infrastructure
The City of Winnipeg has made significant investments in permanent flood protection since the flood of 1997. These investments include primary and secondary dikes, land drainage improvements and upgrades to combined sewer systems.
