This study is now complete.
For more information please visit the Southwest Transitway website.

Public Open House

A Public Open House to review and provide feedback on three options being proposed for improvements to the Pembina Highway Underpass was held May 9, 2012 at the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba (APEGM), 870 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Download the Open House Display.

The Options being considered:

Pembina Underpass Option 1

Option #1

Remove the existing sidewalk on east side of the underpass to provide space for a third northbound lane. Construct pedestrian and cycle paths on the east and west side of underpass by tunneling through the existing railway embankment.

Pembina Underpass Option 2

Option #2

Replace the existing railway bridge with a new bridge in the same location to provide space for third lane northbound and increase lane widths on the existing lanes. Construct pedestrian and cycle paths on the east and west side of Pembina within the street right of way.

Pembina Underpass Option 3

Option #3

Replace the existing railway bridge with a new bridge on a new alignment to the north to provide space for third lane northbound and increase lane widths on existing lanes. Construct pedestrian and cycle paths on the east and west side of Pembina within the street right of way.

Why is the study required?Pembina Highway Underpass

  1. The number of northbound traffic lanes at the Pembina Highway Underpass needs to be increased from two lanes to three lanes to improve traffic flow.
  2. Pedestrian and active transportation facilities along Pembina Highway at the underpass need to be improved to accommodate connections to the existing and future active transportation facilities and the future facilities that will be provided as part of the overall Winnipeg Active Transportation network.
  3. Land drainage needs to be improved to minimize underpass flooding during heavy rainfalls.
  4. Stage 2 of the Southwest Transitway must be accommodated at the location of the Pembina Underpass.

What is the timing of the study?

The study was initiated in late 2011 and is planned for completion by summer 2012.
