Abinojii Mikanah Renewal

Abinojii Mikanah (Bishop Grandin Boulevard) is an important truck, Transit, and commuter route. We will renew the road in 2024/2025.

Updates

Spring 2025 – We finished improving pavement on eastbound Abinojii Mikanah from River Rd to St. Anne's Rd in 2024. We will landscape adjacent to the eastbound lanes this summer.

In 2025, we will improve pavement on westbound Abinojii Mikanah from Dakota Street to River Road, including intersections.

From Dakota to St. Mary's Road:

  • We will mill the existing asphalt, repair curbs and concrete slabs, and resurface with new asphalt

From St. Mary's to River, we will:

  • Remove existing asphalt and recycle the existing concrete in place
  • Build a new asphalt surface on top of the old road
  • Remove the existing curb, rebuild the outside shoulder, and build a new inside shoulder
  • Upgrades to pedestrian crossings, guardrails, and drainage

Background

Abinojii Mikanah (Bishop Grandin Boulevard) is an important truck, Transit, and commuter route. We will renew the road in 2024/2025.

The goal of this work is to fix the road and improve safety. The road work will consist of removing the existing asphalt and recycling the existing concrete in place. We will construct a new asphalt surface on top of the old road. We will remove the curbs and rebuild the shoulder.

We will also pave the shoulder with asphalt. We will also upgrade signs, traffic signals, guardrails, and drainage.

In 2024, we will work on the eastbound lanes between:

  • River Rd and St. Mary's Rd
  • Dakota St and St. Anne's Rd

We will not do any intersection work in 2024.

The scope of work to be completed in 2025 has yet to be finalized.

What are you doing to the road?

On westbound lanes between St. Mary's Rd and River Rd we will recycle the existing road in-place and build a new road on top. This construction is innovative, goes quickly and provides a new road. The new road will have paved shoulders on both sides and will be very smooth for a long time.

On westbound lanes between Dakota St and St. Mary's Rd we will mill the existing and resurface with asphalt. Some drainage, curb, and concrete repairs will be completed before we resurface the road.

What is happening at the intersections?

We will be milling the existing asphalt at the St. Mary's Rd and Dakota St intersections and resurfacing with asphalt. Some drainage, sidewalk and curb repairs will be completed before we resurface the road.

How has this project considered safety?

A safety audit was performed for Bishop Grandin Boulevard (Abinojii Mikanah) from River Road to St. Anne's Road.

What is the budget for this project?

The total budget is $13 million.
