Louise Bridge Rehabilitation Project

We are fixing the Louise Bridge to extend its life by 30 years and provide reliable service to Winnipeggers. The repairs will occur over multiple years, starting with the foundations in 2026-2027 (Phase 1), and later the bridge deck and trusses in ~2029 (Phase 2).

Updates

February 2026

We are planning major repair work to the Louise Bridge. This is a multi-year project.

We plan to start fixing the bridge foundations in late 2026 and early 2027.

We will do major repairs to the bridge deck and trusses in 2029. The bridge will close to all traffic for this second phase of work.

Background

The bridge is an important river crossing. This project will help the bridge last another 30 years until we can completely replace it.

The project will be phased, starting with repairs to the bridge foundations in Winter 2026-27. Traffic impacts will be minimal during this time.

The bridge will require an extended closure as early as 2029 for major repairs to the bridge deck and trusses.

What is this project about?

We are fixing the Louise Bridge to extend its life by 30 years and provide reliable service to Winnipeggers. The repairs will occur over multiple years, starting with the foundations in 2026-2027 (Phase 1), and later the bridge deck and trusses in ~2029 (Phase 2).

What is the budget for the project?

The budget for the Louise Bridge Rehabilitation project is approximately $40 million.  Preliminary Design work is currently underway and this estimate is subject to change as we confirm the scope.

What work is being done?

We are:

  • Fixing the bridge's foundations (Phase 1)
  • Replacing the concrete bridge deck and repairing the steel trusses (Phase 2)
What improvements are planned for pedestrians and cyclists?

We will widen sidewalks on the bridge as much as possible. Additional active transportation infrastructure is not part of this project.

How can I get updates on the project

Up-to-date information about project progress and other construction-related topics will be posted on this webpage. If you have questions or comments regarding the project, please reach out to Kaili Brown at kbrown@htfc.ca or 204-944-9907.

When will construction happen?

Work on the foundations is planned for Winter 2026-2027. Major work on the bridge to replace the concrete deck and repair the steel trusses could start as early as 2029.  The schedule of these works are subject to change as planning work progresses.

How will construction affect traffic?

Phase 1 work (foundation repairs in 2026-2027) may require short-term closures of the Louise Bridge at times.

Phase 2 (concrete deck and steel truss work) will require a complete closure of the bridge to all traffic for an extended period of time.

How will construction affect pedestrians?

Pedestrian access should continue through most of the foundation repair work in 2026-2027 (Phase 1). We may close the bridge for short periods. The bridge will close to all traffic including pedestrians and cyclists during concrete deck and steel truss work (Phase 2).
