Berkley-Municipal Traffic Calming Project

Traffic calming measures are coming to Berkley Street and Municipal Road between Roblin Boulevard and Rannock Avenue.

Update: March 18, 2024 – The design presented in Phase 1 is now final.

Based on what we heard from the community in Phase 1, we will proceed to construction as early as this summer.

Design solution

Map: Municipal Road and Berkley Street (between Roblin Boulevard and Rannock Avenue) preliminary design

We are installing 12 speed humps: six on each Municipal and Berkley.

  • Speed humps slow speeds by causing a vehicle to move upward and create discomfort for those traveling at higher speeds.
  • The Class 3 cost estimate to install traffic calming measures on Municipal and Berkley is estimated as $24,000. These improvements would be funded through the Road Safety Improvement Program.

Existing conditions

Berkley Street:

  • Berkley Street is a two-lane, undivided, residential local street
    • It is bordered by ditches on either side
    • It has a chip-seal pavement surface
    • There are no sidewalks, so pedestrians must share the road with motor vehicles and bikes
    • Parking is allowed on the west side of the street
  • The speed limit is 50 km/h
  • The daily traffic volume is 720-1,100 vehicles per day, which is on the higher end of the typical range for local streets
  • In terms of land use, the street features single-family residential properties as well as Berkley Square Park

Municipal Road:

  • Municipal Road is a two-lane, undivided, residential local street
    • It is bordered by ditches on either side
    • It has a chip-seal pavement surface on some segments and asphalt on others
    • There are no sidewalks, so pedestrians must share the road with motor vehicles and bikes
    • Parking is allowed on the west side of the street
  • The speed limit is 50 km/h
  • The daily traffic volume is 870-1,200 vehicles per day, which is on the higher end of the typical range for local streets
  • In terms of land use, the street features single-family residential properties
    • Beaumont School is nearby on Betsworth Avenue

Need for traffic calming

These twin roads are high-priority locations for traffic calming measures.

We collected traffic data in May 2022 :

On Berkley Street:

  • The 85th percentile speed, which is the speed at which 85 percent of motorists travel at or below, is between 49 and 53 km/h
  • About 150 vehicles travel 55 km/h or faster every day

On Municipal Road:

  • The 85th percentile speed, which is the speed at which 85 percent of motorists travel at or below, is between 52 and 54 km/h
  • About 185 vehicles travel 55 km/h or faster every day

Traffic calming measures will be installed on both roadways to help slow speeds and create a safer space for all road users.

Next steps

Construction could begin as early as Summer 2024.
