Landfill Gas Testing Program

Each year, we visit homes and businesses around 14 of the City's closed landfills to test the air. This program is part of our regular monitoring and maintenance to ensure there is no risk to residents or to the environment.

Why are you testing the air near landfills?

When garbage in landfills breaks down, gases are released (e.g., methane). We monitor annually to ensure there are no problems caused by the closed landfills.

What do you test for?

We test for methane, a landfill gas. For the last 30 years, we have tested for methane gas and never detected a problem inside a home.

What is a closed landfill?

A closed landfill is a waste disposal site that no longer accepts waste material. We have converted many of our closed landfills into parks, recreation sites or other green spaces (e.g., Kilcona Park, Westview Park).

Why do you test for methane? Are you required to do this?

We are not required to test for methane inside properties surrounding the landfill. However, as due diligence and a customer service, we monitor the gas to ensure there is no risk.

What does the air test involve and how long will the test take?

The test:

  • takes only a few minutes, and
  • involves the staff using a hand-held analyzer in and around the home/building (e.g., basement, garage).
How will I know if my home/building is on the list to be tested?

We will send you a letter one to two weeks in advance.

How many homes do you test?

Each year, we test about 140 homes and businesses.

Which landfills do you test around?

We test homes and businesses around the following closed landfills, shown with a red pin on the map below:

  • River Road
  • Kimberley
  • St. Boniface Dump Site
  • St. Boniface Site I
  • St. Boniface Site II
