We are looking at options for collecting recyclables from your home:

  • continuing with the current program (weekly manual collection with blue boxes)
  • weekly automated collection using 240 litre carts (which holds the contents of 3 to 4 blue boxes)
  • bi-weekly automated collection using 240 or 360 litre carts (which holds the contents of 5 to 6 blue boxes)

Background

Winnipeg residents have embraced recycling since the curbside blue box program was introduced in 1995. More Winnipeggers are participating and more households are placing out multiple boxes. Last year, Winnipeg residents recycled almost 45,000 metric tonnes of material.

When the blue box program began, residents were required to spend a little time preparing their items (e.g., separating materials, removing lids from containers). Today, residents can recycle more items quickly and easily - just toss the items in the box.

Winnipeg can follow the trend of other cities in Canada and the USA towards city-wide automated cart collection for recycling. Roll-out carts could replace blue boxes and allow a more cost-effective and efficient collection service. Collection trucks are equipped with an automated arm that empties each cart, removing the labour concerns associated with the current manual collection system.

City Council approved the Recycling Collection Tender - Permission to Explore the Cost of Cart Collection report on October 28, 2009. We have prepared a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) about automated recycling cart collection to help residents understand the issue.
