High river levels
When river levels in Winnipeg are higher than normal due to spring snow melt or for extended periods of high precipitation during summer months, combined sewer overflows may not occur. To reduce the risk of basement flooding, excess diluted wastewater is pumped to the river system using our system of flood pumping stations.
Normal river levels
With normal river levels, flood pumps are not required. If combined sewers cannot handle all of the runoff entering the sewer system during spring snow melt and rainstorms, most of the snow melt / rain and wastewater mixture flows to the treatment plants but some of the diluted wastewater overflows to the river system.
During dry weather conditions, combined sewers carry all of the wastewater flow to the wastewater treatment plants. In fact, they can carry up to a minimum of 2.75 times the normal dry weather flow.
