North End Water Pollution Control Centre ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection

What is the facility for?

Image showing the proposed UV disinfection building at the NEWPCCThe $21 million ultraviolet (UV) disinfection facility helps us comply with the Province of Manitoba's recreational guidelines for E. coli or fecal coliform. The Province has issued a license to the City for the NEWPCC which includes this requirement and that the license is consistent with the recommendations of the Clean Environment commission made in September 2003.

How big is the facility?

The single storey building is 33.6 metres long by 15.4 metres wide. It also extends 12 metres deep below ground level at its deepest point.

How many UV bulbs are in the facility?

1008 bulbs are distributed in three 15.5 metres long channels.

What is exposure time to the UV bulbs for the wastewater flow?

At average wastewater flow, about 4 seconds. At peak flows, about 2 seconds. The wastewater flow is equally spilt through the three channels.

UV disinfection building elevations

The UV process for wastewater treatment is similar to the UV system installed for the water treatment plant at Deacon Resevoir. However, the pathogen reduction target for drinking water is more stringent.
