Brady Road Resource Management Facility (Brady Road Landfill) methane gas project (Completed)

We have a plan to reduce methane gas from the Brady Road Resource Management Facility (Brady Road Landfill) which involves capturing and possibly using the methane as an energy source.

Background

Methane is produced as garbage decomposes in a landfill. Methane is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Many landfills in Canada and the United States have set up projects to reduce the harmful effect of methane gas.

The amount of harmful gas we will be reducing with this project is equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions from 21,700 passenger vehicles.

Our project (pdf - 267kb) will be at the northeast part of the landfill and will at a minimum include:

  • gas wells and a small pumping station - screened and far removed from the Waverley side of the site
  • a flare (enclosed, hidden flame)

Once the new technology is operating, nearby residents will not hear or smell anything from the project.

As part of this project we have filed a proposal for an Environment Act licence.

A request for proposals for this project has been issued (bid opportunity number 704-2009) and the closing date for proposals is February 26, 2010.

We hope to begin construction in late 2010.
