CSO Water Quality Monitoring

Previously in 2014 and 2015, we monitored water quality in the Red River and Assiniboine River and at select streams when specific wet and dry weather conditions were met. Additionally, we installed automated samplers to collect combined sewer overflow discharge samples during wet weather events. This was to comply with Environment Act No. 3042, Clause 15: Interim Monitoring.

In 2019 Manitoba Conservation and Climate Change, approved the CSO Master Plan. A requirement of the approval is to collect CSO water samples and model river quality data every 5 years to demonstrate improvements in the river water quality due to implementation of the CSO Master Plan. The next river water quality report is due December 31, 2024.

To collect data for the river water quality report, samples were collected from the River and Assiniboine River and at select streams when specific wet and dry weather conditions were met in 2023. Also, at two locations automated samplers were used to collect combined sewer overflow discharge samples during wet weather events. Further sample collection will be completed in 2024.

All the samples collected will be tested for various parameters, including nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and bacteria.
