Hauled wastewater study (Completed)

We are conducting a study to determine an approach to accept and treat hauled wastewater for the next 20 years. This study will help us develop a plan to:

  • Ensure that we handle and treat hauled wastewater in a way that does not harm the environment or our treatment processes
  • Ensure that we can continue to fund our hauled wastewater treatment
  • Identify present and future hauled wastewater flows

Background

We currently accept hauled wastewater at all three of our wastewater treatment plants. More than thirty licensed companies haul wastewater from residential, commercial and industrial properties inside and outside the city.

New licences issued by Manitoba Conservation for our three wastewater treatment plants require us to upgrade the plants to reduce nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the treated wastewater:

  • West End Plant by 2008
  • South End Plant by 2012
  • North End Plant by 2014

Hauled wastewater can be very high strength and can overload or "shock" a treatment plant and prevent the processes from working properly.

The West End plant will be the first of our wastewater treatment plants to be upgraded to reduce nutrients. The new process is sensitive and cannot handle hauled wastewater. As a result, the West End plant will no longer accept hauled wastewater effective July 1, 2007.

Closing the hauled wastewater disposal facility at the West End plant will increase the volume of wastewater hauled to the South and North End plants. Since this will increase the risk of treatment problems at these plants, the study will determine the best way to handle hauled wastewater.
