River flooding
River flooding happens when water levels rise and flow over the riverbanks, putting nearby properties at risk.
Some factors that contribute to river flooding in Winnipeg include:
- Excessive precipitation, such as a heavy rain or snow
- Fast snow melt
- High river levels in communities outside of Winnipeg, such as Fargo and Grand Forks
The City prepares for river flooding every year, depending on the flood forecast from the Province of Manitoba.
