North East Exchange District Study (2014) FAQ

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to provide the City of Winnipeg with a blueprint for prioritized infrastructure improvements in the North East Exchange District over the next 10 years.

Why are we doing this study?

The overall rights-of-way need to be redesigned to meet the current land uses and transportation needs, such as well-connected and safe pedestrian facilities and parking demand. New infrastructure needs to be implemented to meet current standards and guidelines in accordance with the City of Winnipeg Transportation Master Plan and the Complete Communities Direction Strategy.

What are the outcomes of the study?

The outcomes of the study include:

  • Producing a final report outlining the planning process for infrastructure improvements, preliminary designs and an implementation plan.
  • Identifying a proposed timeline, cost estimates and any risks associated with the preliminary designs.
  • Accessing Market Avenue street improvements.
  • Assisting in expediting local infrastructure improvements as funding is available. 

Why were these limits chosen for the study area?

The City of Winnipeg's Public Works Department, in coordination with the Planning, Property and Development Department, established the study's boundaries based on the immediate need to improve a substantial amount of the infrastructure in this area.

How will the historical attributes fit in with this study?

The planned infrastructure improvements will be assessed based on their integration within the historical context of the area. This includes the evaluation of the proposed type of street lighting, street furniture, sidewalks, cycling amenities, etc.

How long will the study take?

The study will be completed mid-summer 2014.
