Winnipeggers asked to weigh in on walk bike project in Wolseley

Public engagement opportunities on until December 6

Winnipeggers have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the Wolseley to Downtown Walk Bike Project until the beginning of December. The project will identify options to improve travel choices, accessibility and connectivity in the area west of the Manitoba legislative building.

The project focuses on Wolseley neighbourhood east-west through Wolseley Avenue/Westminster Avenue, Balmoral Street and Granite Way.

“Through the Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies, the City of Winnipeg is committed to providing and maintaining safe walking and cycling facilities year-round,” said Christopher Baker, the City’s acting Active Transportation Coordinator.

The City wants to know how people use the roads and sidewalks in the area, what is working well and what people think could be improved.

There are four pop up events planned in locations around Wolseley. Three are throughout the day on November 23, and the forth is on November 25. There is also an online survey for people to prioritize design elements, highlight any safety and/or amenity concerns and share their current travel habits. The survey runs until December 6.

Three schools in the area are also engaging their students on the project. Wolseley School, Mulvey School and Laura Secord School will be looking into how students are traveling to and from school as well as doing in-class discussions and take home surveys.

If you have children who go to any of the three schools, or if you work at the school, consider filling out the school travel planning survey.

All information gathered though these engagement opportunities will help shape possible bike network designs. The information will be shared in early 2019, and Winnipeggers will then have the opportunity to give feedback on the preliminary options.

It is expected that the preliminary design will be presented to Council for its consideration in summer 2019. Construction will not occur before Council approval.
