June 3, 2021 marks two years since the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) was released. To honour the victim’s families, and survivors, we have created the MMIWG2S+ garden at City Hall at 510 Main St. The hope is it will bring awareness through education on signage and help respond to Calls for Justice in the Final Report.

It’s important to pay attention to those who advocate on behalf of MMIWG. Tracie Léost is a young Indigenous activist who is passionate about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-spirited peoples (MMIWG2S+). She shared her thoughts with us about how people can take action by committing to the Calls for Justice for all Canadians.

“All change starts with awareness, and the more people know, the better,” explained Léost.

She encourages each one of us to do our part to learn more, and seek out ways to support the families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

We are currently developing an Implementation Plan, which includes initiatives such as: developing and implementing an employee awareness campaign; enhancing existing training opportunities; exploring how the Calls for Justice can inform the development of the Winnipeg Poverty Reduction Strategy; examining current methods the City of Winnipeg uses for data collection; and, considering how Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak programming or funding structure can be improved to respond to the Final Report.
