OurWinnipeg 2045 and Complete Communities are now available for comment

With Winnipeg on pace to grow by over 160,000 people in the next 20 years, the City of Winnipeg is determining how our city should grow in way that builds community, improves quality of life, and ensures sustainability for the environment.

The blueprint for how Winnipeg should grow has been detailed in strategic planning initiatives that we have released for Winnipeg residents to share their views on.

OurWinnipeg is our 25-year development plan which provides a vision, goals, and policies meant to influence leadership and good governance, priority setting, delivery of City services, how residents get around, and decisions on how Winnipeg grows. OurWinnipeg also considers important aspects of growth, such as environmentally resilience, economic prosperity, and social equity.

Building on policies set out in OurWinnipeg, the Complete Communities Direction Strategy is a city-wide secondary plan that guides growth, development, and land use in Winnipeg.

Public engagement on OurWinnipeg and the Complete Communities Direction Strategy is continuing until August 10, 2020 for residents to provide feedback on the plans through online surveys and discussion forums. There are also two events planned which will be held virtually through Zoom:

OurWinnipeg: Sustainable Development Goals

Complete Communities: Growing Sustainably

Over the last few years, we have undertaken an extensive review of OurWinnipeg and the Complete Communities Direction Strategy in order to update the documents according to the current priorities of Winnipeg residents.

“The review incorporated a lot of research and community feedback,” said Laura Rempel, OurWinnipeg Co-lead.

OurWinnipeg is accompanied by the Complete Communities Direction Strategy 2.0, a city-wide secondary plan that focuses on the physical environment. The primary focus is to describe Winnipeg’s physical characteristics and to introduce an urban structure that creates a framework for the city’s future growth and development.

“The updates to Complete Communities are based on extensive research and consultation with the public and development industry,” said Michael Robinson, Complete Communities Project Lead.

We want to learn if Winnipeg resident priorities are captured in both documents, as well as how we can all work together to implement both OurWinnipeg and Complete Communities.

Goals

Policy review and development was the first step in the OurWinnipeg review. The next step involves Council and provincial approval, then working together with government and Winnipeg residents to achieve the shared goals outlined in the plan.

OurWinnipeg’s vision is to create a thriving, sustainable, and resilient city, grounded in a strong commitment for human rights, which is welcoming and contributes to an equitable and high quality of life for all.
