Scholarship program one part of the City's Indigenous Youth Strategy

For more than a decade Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak has been working with the community to develop and deliver programs for Winnipeg’s Indigenous youth.

Meaning ‘Young Indigenous People Leading’ in Ojibway, Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak is the City of Winnipeg’s Indigenous Youth Strategy. Its goal is to provide culturally appropriate programs and supports related to employment, literacy, and recreation. The strategy uses the guiding principles of sharing, caring, kindness, and truth.

“Through Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak, we are walking alongside the youth and supporting resiliency, self-sustainability, pride, and future opportunities for Indigenous youth,” said Rhonda Forgues, Manager of Indigenous Relations.

In addition to partnering with several community organizations to support programs being delivered to Indigenous youth, OAN also works closely with other City departments to offer internships, career training, and recreation programs.

For example, Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak has worked with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) to offer the Indigenous Youth Career Camp. It gives participants the opportunity to test out various roles to see if they would be interested in pursuing a career with the WFPS.

Indigenous youth up to 30-years-of age are also eligible to apply for the Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak Scholarship Program. They must be a post-secondary student enrolled in a trades program and in need of tuition assistance.

The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded based on the above criteria as well as a combination of academic achievement and community leadership. Preference is given to students interested in pursuing a career with the City of Winnipeg.

Applications are accepted until December 13, 2019.
