Preserving the past leads to award for Modernist City library

St. Vital Library renovation recognized by Heritage Winnipeg

Renovations to St. Vital Library have won the City of Winnipeg an award in recognition of how elements of its past were preserved.

The Conservation Award of Excellence was presented by Heritage Winnipeg earlier this month. It was for the City’s commitment to undertake a sensitive maintenance and upgrade project.

St. Vital Library officially opened in 1963 and was designed by local architect George A. Stewart. In 2014, the library became the first Modernist-style building added to the City’s List of Historical Resources.

Renovations to add modern accessibility features started in 2015. An elevator and ramp were installed, washrooms were upgraded, and new flooring, paint, and skylights were added.

During the process, the Heritage Buildings and Resources Committee was involved to ensure the renovation project respected and preserved the library's heritage elements.

Heritage Winnipeg also recognized Bridgman Collaborative Architecture for designing the renovation, as well as working collaboratively with the City of Winnipeg on the project.
