Public Safety Building exterior demolition now underway

For over half a century, the Public Safety Building has stood at the corner of William Avenue and Princess Street. Piece by piece, the building is now carefully coming down. Demolition work is underway on the building and adjacent Civic Centre Care Park to make way for new multi-use facilities that will be built as part of the Market Lands redevelopment project.

Residents curious about the status of the work can watch a livestream on the City’s YouTube channel. The feed, from a camera mounted on the Susan A. Thompson Building, shows the exterior of the Public Safety Building and the Civic Centre Car Park looking west.

Since last fall, crews have been working on hazardous materials abatement and demolition work within the Public Safety Building and parkade structure. Exterior demolition started in January with the work anticipated to be finished by this September.

The safe and methodical demolition is being done in an environmentally responsible manner. A targeted 95 percent of building and site materials, including limestone, concrete, and metals, will be salvaged for re-use or recycling.

The demolition will allow for the site to be redeveloped. Updates on this project can be found on the City’s Planning, Property, & Development webpage.
