Browsing the library stacks safely during COVID-19

A look inside the reopening at Winnipeg Public Library branches

October 6, 2020

A visit to Winnipeg Public Library branches looks a little different during COVID-19. Several safety measures are in place to ensure you, your family, and our employees stay safe.

“We’re encouraging quick visits to the library,” said Barbara Bourrier-LaCroix, Acting Administrative Coordinator of Information and Virtual Services. “Plan your visit and keep it short.”

Expanded services are now being offered at all branches, except Cornish Library which remains closed for renovations. This means you can browse the stacks to find your next book, log on to the computers, and use the printing and photocopying services.

“Each branch has a maximum occupancy limit as per provincial regulations,” said Bourrier-LaCroix.

Face masks are required and visitors should use the hand sanitizer available at all entrances and use the self-assessment symptom checklist before proceeding into the branch. If you’re experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms, we ask that you do not enter our libraries.

Once inside, please maintain at least two metres away from all others.

“Library staff have received safety training and are following handwashing protocols and disinfecting frequently used equipment and surfaces regularly,” said Bourrier-LaCroix, adding Plexiglas shields have also been installed at every service desk.

Computers use and study space is limited. If you are planning to visit the ideaMILL, be aware that only select maker equipment is available.

You are able to pick up holds yourself again and returns are accepted 24 hours a day through the book return chutes. All materials returned will be quarantined for a minimum of 96 hours for added safety.

A valid library card will grant you access to the digital library. It is always open and you can access eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, streaming movies, music, and much more.
