New project publically tracks energy consumption and GHG emissions of Winnipeg buildings

City calling on commercial and institutional building owners to participate

June 10, 2020

In an effort to promote data transparency and support its climate action goals, the City of Winnipeg has created a new project to publicly map community building energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The City is calling on eligible Winnipeg commercial and institutional building owners to register for free to participate in the Building Energy Disclosure Project. By registering, building owners agree to track their building’s energy and GHG performance on ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and disclose key building profile and performance metrics for inclusion on the public disclosure map.

The public disclosure map is searchable by address, building type, size, and age.

“The building sector is the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Winnipeg,” said Gurmeet Singh Ghera, the City’s Green Buildings Specialist.

Participants will receive a scorecard that highlights their building’s key energy and GHG performance metrics, as well as access to free workshops provided through the City and its project consultant, the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).

“This data could be used to make their buildings more environmentally friendly, comfortable, and less expensive to operate,” said Ghera

The Building Energy Disclosure Project is made possible by a financial contribution from the Government of Canada’s Department of Natural Resources.
