Annual spring cleanup takes roughly 500 employees

Spring cleaning at the City of Winnipeg is a massive undertaking. The entire street network, including back lanes and sidewalks, will be swept.

Typically starting in mid-April depending on weather, the annual city-wide cleanup takes roughly 500 staff, which includes City employees and contract workers.

This year’s spring cleanup operations begin on Monday, April 22.

“Our crews will be busy cleaning up sand and debris from more than 7,000 kilometres of streets, 1,600 kilometres of walkways, and over 50 bridges and medians,” said Michael Cantor, Manager of Streets Maintenance.

The downtown area, major routes, bridges, and overpasses will be targeted first, with the rest of the city to follow.

Boulevards will be cleaned on main routes, bus routes, and collector streets. Cleanup of boulevards in residential areas will be limited to areas where there is excessive accumulation of sand.

Temporary no parking sign are only installed on streets where parking could impact the street cleaning operation and help to ensure the streets are cleaned quickly and efficiently during scheduled clean up times.

Residents are encouraged to find alternate parking during the specified times or they could be ticketed and/or towed. Motorists should also give all cleaning equipment a minimum of 15 metres of space.
