City of Winnipeg 2018 budget given international award

November 27, 2018

The City of Winnipeg has received international recognition for its 2018 budget.

The budget was awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association.

“It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting,” said the association in a news release.

A panel of independent reviewers assessed each entry.

“The award reflects the tremendous effort of our staff in Corporate Finance as well as all our departments, Special Operating Agencies and elected officials,” said Mike Ruta, the Chief Financial Officer for the City of Winnipeg.

In order to receive the budget award, the City had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.

The guidelines were assessed on how well the budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide as well as a communication device. The City of Winnipeg’s submission had to receive a proficient rating in all four categories.

Based in Chicago, Illinois, the Government Finance Officers Association represents public finance officials throughout Canada and the United States. It has more than 19,000 members from all levels of government.
