Free dog spaying/neutering for Winnipeggers living on low income

Spaying or neutering your dog helps create a safer community, and is important for keeping your furry friend healthy and happy. A new limited-time program aims to expand access to this service to more Winnipeggers.

The Prevent a Litter program provides free spaying/neutering services for licensed dogs to Winnipeg residents living on low income. An application must be filled out. Qualifying residents with unlicensed dogs can access the service with the purchase of a 12-month license at a discounted rate of $40.25.

“It also provides a significant discount on your dog’s license,” said Leland Gordon, the General Manager of Animal Services.

To qualify, you must be a Winnipeg resident, and one of the following must apply: you have a social assistance case number, you are a new permanent resident or refugee who has been in Canada for less than 18 months and have not filed a tax return, or you have an economic family income below the low income cut-off.

The program will be available for a limited time, and was made possible by a generous private donation.

While the Prevent a Litter program is only for dogs, low-income spaying/neutering services for cats is available at the Winnipeg Humane Society and is subsidized by the City.
